FIFTYSEVEN is an independent deep tech branding agency and web design studio, remote by design, founded in 2016 and led by Petar Stojakovic, working with founders in Switzerland, the UK and the US. It makes the brand strategy, brand identity, websites, 3D visualisation, explainer films and pitch decks for companies whose product is a sensor, a chip, a process or a machine that a corporate buyer, an investor or a hire has to picture before they can believe it. Published deep tech work: Koniku, biochips; Roswell Biotechnologies, now SemiconBio, molecular electronics on a semiconductor chip; Tacterion, tactile sensors, in 3D; and On-Edge, AI inference. The rule here is older than the studio: never make the technology sound further along than it is, and never make it sound smaller than it is either.

## TRUSTED BY

- Koniku
- On-Edge
- Roswell Biotechnologies, now SemiconBio
- Tacterion

The prototype has never failed a demo with its engineer in the room.

The demos that decide the year happen in other rooms. A procurement lead forwards a link to a plant manager who was not there. An associate at the fund opens your site at night, with no one to ask. The senior hire you need reads the careers page on a phone.

None of them gets the bench, the probe or the person holding it; they get what was left behind: a website, a film, a deck.

That demo runs every day, and nobody from the company attends.

1.

## WHAT A DEEP TECH COMPANY HAS TO EXPLAIN, AND TO WHOM

The reader has no frame for the product, so each one borrows the nearest:

- A process engineer places a new sensor next to the ones already on the line and asks for the data sheet.
- A corporate development lead places it next to the last three startups that pitched and asks for the pilot's success criteria.
- An investor's technical advisor places it next to the state of the art and asks which TRL the prototype has reached, and which [MRL](https://www.dodmrl.com/).

A chip has a process node and a tape-out date, a sensor has a layer stack and a spec, a robot has a cycle time and an uptime figure; none of it sells the way software sells, on a gradient and a promise.

2.

## A biochip that can smell

### Koniku

Based: Berkeley, U.S.A.

Field: Neurotechnology on a chip

FOCUS

Biochips that detect smell: Koniku makes them by merging synthetic neurobiology with silicon, in the company's own words. The device runs on biological neurons engineered to carry the receptors a task needs, and picks up particles of explosives, drugs or berries, for security, defence and agriculture.

THE WORK

The first brief, in 2016, was the one every deep tech founder eventually writes: "our number 1 priority by far is that corporate customers get it." Not investors first, not press first.

The explainer film led the way: it is where biology on silicon gets a picture a non-specialist can hold. Then the website, timed to launch "at the touch of a button" alongside the company's announcements. Then the decks: a TED talk, a convertible note round, a Series A. Then a second website and the application its customers use with the device.

## WHERE DEEP TECH WEBSITES LOSE THE READER

Five familiar scenes, what the reader makes of each, and the better version.

| HOW IT GOES NOW | HOW IT READS | WHAT IT SHOULD DO INSTEAD |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Every headline says "breakthrough". | To anyone who has heard ten this quarter: the eleventh. | Let the specification do the boasting: the number, the unit, the comparison. |
| The chip is rendered like a perfume bottle. | Beautiful, and nobody can say what it does. | Show what enters, what changes and what comes out. |
| The only video shows the prototype on a test rig. | To a plant manager: not ready for my floor. | Film it doing the job where it will be sold: the line, the cabin, the hand. |
| The careers page offers perks and a mission statement. | To a senior hire weighing a safer offer: no reason to take the risk. | Open the lab: the problem, the bench and the people they would build it with. |
| A champion inside the corporate buyer needs the founder on each internal call. | Procurement hears the idea second-hand, and the pilot waits. | Give the champion one page to forward: the use case, the data sheet and the next step. |

A deep tech brief begins with what the object has to prove, to whom, and by when. That is the conversation to start, and it goes to Petar.

## A sensing layer under a millimetre thick

### Tacterion

Based: Munich, Germany

Field: Tactile sensing

FOCUS

Tactile sensing in a layer under a millimetre thick: Tacterion makes plyon, which reads proximity, touch and force, and bends with the surface above it.

APPLICATIONS

From steering wheels and power tool handles to home appliances and wearables on the factory floor, as the company lists them. In each, the value is in what the surface starts to notice.

THE WORK

A 3D visualisation of the layer and a hero animation for the company's relaunched website, delivered to a fixed date.

[Tacterion, Deep Tech Art Direction and 3D Visualization CASE BRIEF](https://www.fiftyseven.co/work/tacterion)

5.

## WHAT A DEEP TECH BRANDING AGENCY BUILDS, AND WHAT A BRAND CANNOT DO

One production, several lives: the 3D model of the chip becomes the film, the website hero, the deck slide and the trade show screen.

None of it replaces the evidence. A working prototype beats a polished deck, and any founder who has run a paid pilot knows it. The brand's part is to make the prototype legible, and to keep every claim inside what the test report or the evaluation kit has shown.

- Strategy and positioning: the one position nobody has taken, in the object's own nouns.
- Brand identity and design system: strict enough for a data sheet and a trade show wall, open enough for the team to extend without the studio.
- 3D visualisation, motion and explainer film: the object at work, from the inside out.
- Deep tech website design and build: in Webflow or custom code, and handed over to run in-house.
- Pitch deck and launch materials: one story across the deck and the website, so the number on slide four is the number on the website.

## A single molecule on a semiconductor chip

### Roswell Biotechnologies, now SemiconBio

Based: San Diego, U.S.A.

Field: Molecular electronics

FOCUS

For a deep tech reader, Roswell's point was the silicon: a single molecule wired into a circuit on a semiconductor chip, "ultimately compatible" with standard microchips, in the company's words.

THE WORK

The studio made the identity, design system and website, and Roswell came back for its launch. SemiconBio, as the company is called today, still runs on that identity and website.

ON RECORD

Funding: $50M+ raised, per [MIT Technology Review](https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/03/31/1048672/roswell-molecular-electronics-revival/) and [PitchBook](https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/227124-46).

## Inference in the cloud, on premise, on edge

### On-Edge

Based: Utah, U.S.A.

Field: AI inference

FOCUS

As a holding, On-Edge builds, owns and invests in companies that optimise AI inference, in the cloud, on premise or on edge, in its own words.

COMPANIES

Verbum interprets speech across more than 140 languages in under a second and a half, with client data kept off public clouds, for contact centres, regulated healthcare and finance, and global events. Resolut AI deploys generative AI inside an organisation's walls, for enterprises and state institutions whose information never leaves the building.

THE WORK

The identity and the website, launched in 2026: the newest on this page. A holding is a different brief from a single product; its brand has to make room for businesses that do not exist yet.

"FIFTYSEVEN blends strategy with execution at a very high level," is how Jed Morley, Founder and CEO of Backstory, the brand consultancy behind the brief, put it on [Clutch](https://clutch.co/go-to-review/be602d00-5a60-4b8c-a8d1-7cc3f60c5403/489711).

## HOW A DEEP TECH ENGAGEMENT RUNS

Deep tech briefs arrive with a date, rarely a marketing one: a pilot milestone at a customer, a qualification campaign, a design-in window that closes when the customer freezes its BOM, a trade show, a round.

The date sets the order of work. When it is close, the object comes first, as a film or a visualisation, with the essentials around it.

What may be shown is settled before the first sketch, under an NDA where needed. The brand, the trademark and every source file, 3D included, belong to the company from delivery. The founder is needed at a few decisive points, not in a standing meeting through a test campaign or a raise.

"Competence, attention to detail, thoughtfulness, speed of execution" is how Koniku's founder described the choice on [Clutch](https://clutch.co/go-to-review/be602d00-5a60-4b8c-a8d1-7cc3f60c5403/16912).

Petar Stojakovic, Founder and Design Director, leads every engagement and is in every meeting the founder, CEO or CMO is in. Day to day, the work runs through a senior team he puts together for the brief: the marketing lead has one daily contact, and the chief engineer reviews the mechanism, not the layout.

## DEEP TECH SECTORS: WHERE THE WORK IS PUBLISHED, AND WHERE IT IS A BRIEF

Four categories carry published work and name the client; the other seven wait for a brief. What travels between the two is a decade of craft rather than knowledge of robotics or photonics: naming the object the way its engineers do, giving a complex mechanism a narrative a buyer can repeat, and holding the design standard of every project on this page.

## QUESTIONS DEEP TECH FOUNDERS ASK

### What does a deep tech branding agency do?

It makes a difficult technology clear to the people who buy it, fund it and join it: positioning that says what the product does, an identity that holds from the data sheet to the trade show wall, a website the studio designs and builds, and the 3D and film that show how it works.

When choosing one, look for published work on products as hard to explain as yours. FIFTYSEVEN's published work in the sector is Koniku, Roswell Biotechnologies, Tacterion and On-Edge.

### How do you show a product nobody can see?

By deciding, with the engineer who owns the technology, what the reader is allowed to see and at what level of abstraction, and then building that picture in 3D or motion. Tacterion's sensor sits under a surface, so the visualisation shows the layer and what the surface does when touched; Koniku's chip holds living cells, so the film and the website explain by analogy what the chip does with a smell.

### Do you work with AI, robotics and advanced manufacturing companies?

The published work is chips and sensors, plus a brand and website for a holding in AI inference; robotics and advanced manufacturing come in as a brief, not as a record.

Robotics website design brings the same problem in a different object: a machine that can be filmed doing a job, a line whose case is made in yield and cycle time. What carries over is the method.

### What should a deep tech website show before a corporate pilot or a round?

The whole vision.

A founder is right to want to show more than the data sheet: where the technology goes, why it matters, what changes when it works. The website carries that in full, with the stage stated as it is, the evidence next to the claim, and a route to verify: a spec, an evaluation kit, a call with the engineer. It does not win a pilot on its own; it makes the first explanation travel.

### When is the right moment: the round, the relaunch or the trade show?

Whichever comes first, with enough weeks for the object to be understood, not only drawn.

The moments repeat across the sector: a seed or Series A where the deck has to hold up in diligence; a first enterprise customer whose qualification process decides whether the company lands on the approved vendor list; a competitor that starts describing your technology in its own words. In each of them, the website has to say plainly what the company offers and what sets it apart.

### Do you design pitch decks for deep tech fundraising?

Yes, always inside the same system as the website: what capital reads on Tuesday is what its technical advisor checks on Wednesday. Koniku's decks were built for a TED talk, a convertible note round and a Series A.

### What do you show under NDA, and what stays out?

What may be shown is agreed in writing before the first sketch: the whole mechanism, an analogy or a single layer. For Koniku's patent-pending electrodes, the website shows the principle in three illustrated steps, sensor, DNA coating, neuron connect, under a patent-pending seal: enough for a partner to believe it, not enough to copy it.

### How long does deep tech branding take, and can we start with the 3D only?

Three to four months from brief to a launched brand and website; with 3D visualisation and an explainer film, a little over four. A visualisation or a film alone runs in weeks, as Tacterion's did, and can grow into a full identity later without being remade.

A rush to a trade show or a round is an exception: priced separately, taken when the studio has room, and it shortens the brand phase rather than skipping it.

### What does deep tech branding cost?

Mid to high five figures for most deep tech engagements. The smallest, tightly scoped ones start at $30,000 and cover the essentials, done properly: positioning, the core brand identity and a landing page.

The 3D of the object, the explainer film, the deck, the full brand system and the full website are added on top, each scoped on its own; an entry engagement usually runs two to three months.

The proposal names what is out before any number goes in. More in the [studio FAQ](https://www.fiftyseven.co/faq).
